Why Are New Zealanders Called Kiwis?

Kiwis are New Zealand’s iconic native bird. The kiwi bird emblem was first seen on the badges of soldiers in the late 1880s and is now a commonly used nickname used to describe people from New Zealand.

This is a kiwi… A kiwi is a small, flightless bird that is endemic to New Zealand. That means that not only is it native to the country, but it is not found anywhere else in the world.

This is a kiwi fruit…. Kiwifruit got their name due to their resemblance to the kiwi bird – both are brown and fluffy.

New Zealand is a multicultural South Pacific nation. Aotearoa is its Māori name. Māori, New Zealand’s indigenous population, migrated from Polynesia around 1000 years ago. They comprise 16.5% of New Zealand’s population. The majority of New Zealanders are of British and Irish heritage, and other European cultures. There had been a recent migration of Pacific Islanders from countries such as Fiji, Samoa and Tonga who now call New Zealand as their home.

New Zealand is a sports-oriented country and are renowned for their sporting passion for rugby, yachting and netball. Most New Zealanders also take interest in other games such as cricket, soccer, golf, squash, basketball, badminton, hockey, tennis, cycling, athletics, skiing and snow boarding.

New Zealand’s major export products include meat, fish, fruit, dairy products and timber. Tourism and education are also becoming increasingly important to the economy.

Climate

The warmest months are December, January and February, while the coldest are in June, July and August. In Dunedin, Spring and Summer days can become quite warm with temperatures ranging from 58 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (14 to 26 degrees Celsius). It is generally cool in the winter months, averaging 52 degrees Fahrenheit (11 degrees Celsius) from June to September. There are sometimes frosty mornings, usually followed by clear sunny days, and occasional snowfalls. Generally, garments purchased for use in the warmer climates of Asian or Pacific countries are not quite warm enough for New Zealand winters.

Summer

The official summer months are December to February, which has high temperatures and bright sunshine. Days are usually long and sunny even though you will experience mild weather when night falls. There are many interesting outdoor activities where you can entertain your self during this period. Swimming in beaches, sunbathing, surfing, boating, and water sports are namely a few. Queenstown in particular (South Island) is popular during summer time with a range of activities.

Autumn

NZ autumn period is from March to May of each year. This period the temperature remains slightly colder than the summer but allowing people to swim until April. You may experience the beauty of the nature by witnessing the change of colors of tree leaves.

Winter

Winter, from June to August brings in colder weather to many arrears of NZ and rain to North Island. The entire mountain range of both islands will be covered with snow and creates excellent environment for skiing. This is the ideal time to visit glaciers, mountains, and other destinations with scenic beauty.

Spring

The spring weather will take over NZ during September to November. During this time there are many festivals organized by kiwis. It is also the season for white water rafting in many designated rivers where the water levels go high with the help of melting spring snow.

Currency

Transport
